چکیده

The microbiota of the human gastrointestinal tract plays a key role in efficient nutrient absorption and thus maintaining human health. Through the process of fermentation, gut bacteria metabolize various nutritional substrates to end products such as organic acids, vitamins, short-chain fatty acids etc. Therefore, an optimum balance is required between the intestinal microflora and its host. Under certain circumstances such as diet, medication, stress, age and general living conditions, this balance may be altered leading to the colonization of pathogenic species which is manifested as different gut disorders like inflammatory bowel disease, colonic cancer etc. Therefore, knowledge of the gut microflora and its interactions may lead to the development of dietary strategies that serve to sustain or even improve normal gastrointestinal microbiology.

Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics: approaches for modulating the microbial ecology of the gut.

The microbiota of the human large intestine influences health and well-being. Whereas it has long been accepted that gut bacteria play a role in host pathogenesis, current opinion is that certain microflora components can have beneficial effects on gastroenteritis resistance, blood lipids, antitumor properties, lactose tolerance, and gastrointestinal immunity. It is postulated that in the infan...

Invitro e¡ectsof selected synbiotics on the humanfaecal microbiota composition

Synbiotics are recognized means of modulating gut microbiota composition and activities. However, whether synbiotics are superior to prebiotics and probiotics alone in moderating the gut microbiota towards a purportedly healthy composition has not been determined. Eight selected synbiotics (short-chain fructooligosaccharides or fructooligosaccharides, each combined with one of four probiotics, ...

Synbiotic approaches to human health and well‐being

Synbiotics refer to combinations of probiotics and prebiotics that act synergistically to confer health benefits to the host. As a therapeutic strategy, they provide a gentle yet powerful method for modulating the composition and metabolic output of the human gut microbiota. In the context of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, synbiotics have the potential to act as cost-effective ...

Modulating Composition and Metabolic Activity of the Gut Microbiota in IBD Patients

The healthy intestine represents a remarkable interface where sterile host tissues come in contact with gut microbiota, in a balanced state of homeostasis. The imbalance of gut homeostasis is associated with the onset of many severe pathological conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic gastrointestinal disorder increasing in incidence and severely influencing affected ind...
